On December 4th, 2015, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research published the paper, “Uranium Removal from Seawater by Means of Polyamide 6 Fibers Directly Grafted with Diallyl Oxalate through a Single-Step, Solvent-Free Irradiation Process,” as part of a special issue on the extraction of uranium from seawater. The paper was authored by Travis C. Dietz, Claire E. Tomaszewski, Zois Tsinas, Dianne Poster, Aaron Barkatt, Mohammad Adel-Hadadi, Fred B. Bateman, Lonnie T. This week Professor Al-Sheikhly has been invited to and will speak at the 15th annual International Congress of Radiation Research in Kyoto, Japan as an Eye Opener for the Chemistry, Radiation Chemistry and Radiation Processes section of the conference.

This week, Travis Dietz was awarded a Council of Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards student grant award for his work on the extraction of uranium from seawater using radiation-grafted fabrics. The award will cover Travis’s attendance at the council’s annual meeting at the National Institute of Standards and Technology the week of April 26th. Travis will be presenting a short five minute presentation of his work as well as a poster during the conference.

The Laboratory for Radiation and Polymer Science is led by Professor Mohamad Al-Sheikhly at the University of Maryland, College Park. Our group is dedicated to exploring the effects of radiation on materials and the study of polymers. In order to perform this research we work in close collaboration with a number of other institutions including The Catholic University of America, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, The University of Texas, Austin, among others.
