Collecting Freshwater Algae at the ‘vulture’ Site

The lab went on a week-long collecting expedition to Florida in early August, with our primary goal being to collect some understudied, warm-water dinoflagellates. We collected in both freshwater and open ocean environments, isolating single cells with drawn glass capillaries. We won’t really know how successful the expedition was for several months as we work through the laboratory process of single-cell transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics, but we do know that we found a number of our target organisms. Although we spend most of our time doing bioinformatics, it is nice to be in a line of research that calls for field work from time to time.
