Holistic Review Resources

In early 2016, the Council of Graduate Schools published a report on this topic.  In collaboration with our graduate programs and the Holistic Review Faculty Working Group, we have been working steadily to move in this direction since that time.

As you already know, in the holistic review process—also known as full file review—readers give careful consideration to all the credentials presented by the student.  Reviewers assess the application materials for indicators that the applicant possesses qualities known to contribute to successful completion of the degree program. Such a review seeks to determine if the applicant has not only the academic qualifications for admission but also the skills and experiences that facilitate degree completion and a successful research career. In short, holistic review ensures that no single factor leads to either accepting the student or excluding the student from admission.

Since we began working on this process together at Maryland, we have had thought-leaders help us find our way.  Internally, we have Drs. Kimberly Griffin and Bill Sedlacek from the College of Education.  Both have been instrumental in guiding our efforts, along with the aforementioned faculty group.  We hosted Dr. Keivan Stassun in 2016, the founder of the Fisk-Vanderbilt program, and in December of 2017, we welcomed Dr. Julie Posselt and Dr. Casey Miller.
