

Automating Black Joy Micro-grant
We are excited to announce that the application for the BCaT Automating Black Joy Microgrant is now open! The application is open to all scholars, creatives, including artists, activists, designers, industry workers, undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty. Automating Black Joy Microgrant will support projects that point a critical lens toward the future of AI, automation, digital culture, social media use, and content creation by Black users.
Microgrant applications close at midnight ET on Wednesday, 12th November 2025, and we will award up to $1500 to successful proposals. Applications can be made by individuals or small teams via this link.

Washington, DC undergraduate public affairs internship opportunity for spring 2026
Woodberry Associates is seeking paid interns to join its team of public and government affairs professionals for Spring 2026. Based in Washington, DC, this 12-week, in-person internship offers a hands-on opportunity to explore careers in public affairs, health care, and education policy. Interns are fully integrated into client service teams, gaining practical experience while developing essential professional skills.
Program Highlights:
- Paid position at $17.95/hour
- Flexible schedule (about 15–20 hours/week)
- In-person in Washington, DC
- Weekly mentorship and professional development sessions
- Internship runs approximately 12 weeks, beginning mid-January 2026
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in a college or university and be at least a rising junior
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize projects and adapt to changing needs
- Initiative, creativity, and willingness to learn and take feedback

Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) engage students of all backgrounds and disciplines in research project teams led by UMD faculty members. Undergraduates join a team of peer students, work towards common project goals, and gain hands-on research experience while earning course credit for their work. Students stay on their team for multiple semesters and progress from training to leadership roles.
This opportunity is open to UMD undergraduates who have completed at least two semesters and are in good academic standing. Applications purposefully do not ask about GPA, grades, or prior academic experience. Students are primarily selected based on motivation, interest, and commitment toward the team they hope to join.
Students may apply to join one of the 14 VIP Teams.

BSOS Freshmen/Sophomores:
The University Career Center offers two 1-credit career courses, EDCP108i and PSYC123, designed to support students in exploring career options, searching for internships or jobs, and planning their next steps after graduation.
EDCP 108i: Academic Transitions to Internships is a 7-week (half-semester) course specifically recommended for students who have not yet experienced an internship and are actively seeking one. This one-credit, online asynchronous course guides students through essential exploratory and preparation activities, including:
- Understanding the components of an internship
- Increasing knowledge about an intended career field
- Developing a resume and cover letter
- Identifying potential internship sites
- Introducing interviewing and networking skills
Through this course, students gain a comprehensive experience in the internship search process. Additionally, students have opportunities for synchronous activities with the instructor and career professionals, such as mock interviews, resume reviews, and group meetings.
Please note: This course is only available to students with fewer than 105 cumulative credits.

BSOS Juniors/Seniors:
PSYC 123: The Psychology of Getting Hired introduces students to the science behind the hiring process and equips students with strategies to apply with a competitive edge. This one-credit, online asynchronous course guides students through six modules, featuring activities designed to:
- Identify strengths, interests, and professional development goals
- Learn to use Handshake to find internships and professional positions
- Develop a high-quality professional resume
- Establish an effective professional social media presence and network
- Practice and refine crucial interview skills
- Create a career development plan
Two significant activities—a resume review with University Career Center staff, an employer, or an alumnus, and a mock interview with volunteer professionals—are conducted live via Zoom.
