Scholarship Opportunities for BSOS Students

The Jay G. Cohen Memorial Student Opportunities Endowed Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Jay G. Cohen, a prominent Baltimore attorney and proud Terp husband and father.

  • This fund will provide students with resources to pay for part (or all) of an LSAT preparation course
  • Additional expenses incidental to the law school admissions process (e.g. application fees, transportation for visits, etc.).

All full-time UMD undergraduate students are eligible to apply; preference given to students in their junior year, or non-graduating Spring 2024 seniors.

BSOS SCHOLARSHIPS

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences offers a variety of scholarships to current and returning BSOS students (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors). Eleven (11) different scholarships (some with multiple award recipients) are available for the Fall 2024 semester.

  • Scholarships are available to specific majors (ECON, PSYC, BIO PSYC/NEUR)
  • To residents of specific geographic regions (Gloucester, Camden or Burlington counties in New Jersey or attended William Penn Charter School, Philadelphia, PA; see Herskowitz Endowed Scholarship Award).
  • A scholarship available to students from Nassau or Suffolk counties in Long Island, New York; see Portogallo Family Endowed Scholarship.
    First generation students (see Jean & Robert Steele Scholarship and the Montgomery Family Endowed Scholarship).
  • Graduated from a secondary school in Europe, Asia, South America, the Middle East, Africa, or Canada (see Benjamin, Mary, and Maryanne Sharp Endowed Scholarship).

Awards range from $500-$3,500. Students graduating Spring 2024 are not eligible. View all BSOS scholarships.

For UNDOCUMENTED/FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS

The Terp DREAM Scholarship is intended to provide scholarships to undergraduate, undocumented, first-generation students who have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland and who have financial need. Multiple scholarships will be distributed, between $250-$1,000.

CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP

Are you a passionate fiction writer with a flair for storytelling? The Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing honors the memory of Sebastian Herbstein, a talented writer, dedicated scholar and son of BSOS professor, Judith Freidenberg. The scholarship provides two prizes, $1,000 for first prize and $600 for second prize, for works of short fiction of 5,000 words or less. All full-time UMD undergraduate students are eligible to apply (returning to UMD in Fall 2024).
