The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism—better known as START—is a university-based research and education center comprised of an international network of scholars committed to the scientific study of the causes and human consequences of terrorism in the United States and around the world.
INTERNSHIPS:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced undergraduate or graduate student
- The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of geospatial skills, tools, and applications
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- A student working on a degree in geography, geospatial information systems, earth systems, computational social science, or similar
- A candidate in a program working in data science, computer science, engineering, information science, or other discipline could be appropriate if they can appropriately demonstrate their expertise in geospatial methods
ICONS Simulation Project Internship
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate students or undergraduate seniors and juniors only
- Strong English-language communication, research, and persuasive writing skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong editing skills
- Must be in good academic standing
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- Demonstrated academic proficiency or personal experience in one or more of the following:
- Regional expertise (e.g., East Asia, Arctic, Sub-Saharan Africa, Russia, China, Latin America, etc.)
- Functional expertise (e.g., democracy, disinformation, climate, extremism, cybersecurity, nuclear, etc.)
- Technical expertise (e.g., data science, system dynamics, systems thinking, modeling & simulation, R, Python, SQL, Node.js, LLMs, AWS, etc.)
- Journalism, English, Cultural Studies, History, or Policy
- Experience with ICONS simulations, wargaming, red-teaming, serious games, game design, LARPing, or similar interests
- Previous administrative or office experience
Irregular Warfare Research Analyst Internship
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Coursework in relevant field(s), such as political science, international relations, public policy, security studies, etc.
- Attention to detail
- Experience with open-source research
- Strong interest in research, especially security research
- Ability to work independently
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- Enrollment in relevant graduate program, such as political science, international relations, public policy, security studies, etc.
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience or coursework related to international affairs, international security, irregular warfare, unconventional threats, or a related program
- Coursework or experience with open-source research and social science research methods
- Knowledge of systematic literature reviews and social science datasets
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- Functional expertise in a relevant topic (e.g., insurgent activities, asymmetric conflicts, unconventional threats, emerging technology, cybersecurity, etc.)
- Experience with social science coding schemes and codebooks
- Previous experience working with large datasets
- Experience conducting systematic literature reviews
- Relevant and applicable technical expertise (e.g., data science, dataset management, complex system modeling, R, Python, SQL, etc.)
Modeling & Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, On Topics of Social Complexity (MAISC) Internship
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate students or undergraduate seniors and juniors only
- Strong English-language communication, research, and persuasive writing skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong editing skills
- Must be in good academic standing
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- Able to support lit reviews for articles on modeling & simulation, artificial intelligence, on topics of social complexity (MAISC)
- Ability to quickly read and produce summaries of key points of peer reviewed articles, institutional reports, and other literature on MAISC topics
- Familiar with Agile, Kanban, Scaled Agile or other pull-based project management systems
- Interested in exploring the outer boundaries of MAISC topics and not deeply tied to any one method as the ‘right’ one
- Experience with any MAISC components is a plus
- This could be familiarity with modeling & simulation (e.g. system dynamics, CLD systems thinking, agent based modeling), AI (e.g. deep learning, neural networks, machine classifiers, LLM), social complexity (e.g. social sciences)
Terrorism and Targeted Violence (T2V) in the United States Internship
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience with open-source research and social science methods
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
- Strong interest in research
- Ability to work independently and in small groups
- Students with knowledge of domestic extremist groups, hate crimes, forensic psychology, and grievance-based violence are strongly encouraged to apply
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience or coursework related to security studies, international affairs, cybersecurity, computer science, or a related program
- Coursework or experience with open-source research and social science research methods
- Knowledge of systematic literature reviews and social science datasets
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace
Preferred/Ideal Qualifications:
- Experience with social science coding schemes and codebooks
- Experience in social science dataset coding (entering unstructured data into a structured dataset)
- Experience conducting systematic literature reviews
