Tips for attending virtual networking events with a person talking to a screen of people in boxew.

Maximize your participation in online career fairs, informational webinars, and workshops by implementing the following tips.

Organizations are motivated to host sessions to share details about current openings or future openings. Use the opportunity to learn about openings, culture fit, and make a new contact.

  • Ask questions about the application process, logistics of the position, and other relevant details. You may ask any questions that would help you prepare and customize your application materials.
  • Start by introducing yourself (name, class status, and major) and then ask your question.
  • Use the chat feature, but proofread before you submit and avoid text lingo and emojis.
Impression: Look prepared & engaged.

Show who you are! If given the opportunity, turn your camera on. This will create a connection with the presenter, increasing the likelihood that the employer will remember you after the event. When you nod, smile, and look engaged, small actions that demonstrate involvement make a big impression.

Ensure that your video background is clean, well-lit, and professional. Use a plain, neutral-colored background. Lighting placed to your side, not behind you, will be most flattering.

Dress professionally. Dress to impress – you’ll look and feel more professional.
Stand Out: Show your authentic self.

Speak up. Connect with the speakers by introducing yourself when prompted or when you ask a question.

Ask relevant questions. Read previously submitted questions in the chat feature before asking a question. Ask thoughtful questions that enhance your understanding of the organization/industry.

Give the event your full attention. It’s easy to try to multitask during virtual events; however, employers can tell when you’re not fully engaged. Follow your learning style and take notes if that helps you focus!

Use professional business language. Your written communication can greatly influence an employer’s perceptions of you.
Follow-Up: Remain engaged.

If the employer provides contact information, follow up with them to send a post-event thank-you note.
Mention that you appreciate their time.

Highlight what you found interesting about the conversation.

Provide any information they requested from you.

The employer has taken the time to develop the opportunity specifically for you. It takes many hours and involvement from many people to coordinate a 1-hour workshop, so recognizing the employer’s generosity of time and knowledge is a great way to build the relationship.

Submit your application after attending the session, so you can include the information you learned during the session.

Note: Test the technology before the event or log in early to allow time to address any issues.

Pre-registration is a must. This will be your first opportunity to get on the organization’s radar.

Upload your resume, if available. Some organizations will review the resumes, even if they did not speak to the candidate at the event. Review the organization’s webpage to familiarize yourself with the positions they’re hiring for, the type of work they do, and their approach before attending the fair.

Review the organizations attending BEFORE the fair and prepare informed questions for each organization of interest.
