To Add or Change a major in the College:
- Students must meet with the department advisor and obtain the change/addition of major form with appropriate signatures and stamps.
- Students then attend the online Academic Planning Workshop at: Grad Planning Workshop
- Students will submit the change/addition of major form with a completed academic plan to: bsosmajorchange@umd.edu
- Major change or addition of a second major may take ~ 15-20 business days to process.
**Students on academic probation/ dismissal and other designated student populations will be required to schedule an appointment with an advisor to process the change**
Double Majors & Double Degrees:
Students wishing to add a second major or degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Economics, Government & Politics, and/or Psychology must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The departments of African America Studies, Anthropology, Geographical Sciences, Hearing and Speech Sciences, and Sociology will admit students as double majors on case by case basis. First semester freshman are exempt from the 3.0 GPA requirement through the last day of classes of their first semester at the University of Maryland.
UMD encourages students to complete their degree in four years. Students wishing to declare a second major or degree will need to complete a plan that demonstrates their ability to successfully complete the major requirements in those 4 years (8 semesters).
