BSOS BIPOC Collective Meet & Greet

BSOS BIPOC Collective

Our mission is to provide a welcoming space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences to discuss experiences with fellow BIPOC openly, form interdisciplinary connections, and collectively celebrate our diversity. We established this org last semester with support from the BSOS Anti-Black Racism Initiative after recognizing the need for a space at UMD where BIPOC trainees could build community.

Who is it for?
The Collective is for all BIPOC graduate students (i.e., Doctoral and Master’s), postdoctoral fellows, and post-baccalaureate employees (e.g., research assistants holding a bachelor’s degree) in a BSOS department or graduate program. People of all minoritized racial-ethnic backgrounds are welcome. Unfortunately, we do not have the means to support undergraduate students at this time.

When will we meet?
Meetings are typically monthly. However, this fall, we will host one larger meeting to allow members to meet new people and make new connections! Interested folks who cannot attend this meeting or future meetings can contact us to join the Slack channel where we will be sharing resources and other events. Our next meeting will be:

  • Monday, November 11th

*Please use the link below to complete an interest form to confirm your interest in joining the Collective and to provide your availability for Monday, November 11th. Time and location will be sent out once responses are completed.

PSC Postdoctoral Fellowship | University of Michigan

The Institute for Social Research Population Studies Center

PSC Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Population Studies Center has a vibrant interdisciplinary group of postdoctoral fellows. Our fellows benefit from fruitful relationships with PSC faculty mentors and programming designed to provide training in population science perspectives and methods, exposure to interdisciplinary scholarship, and continued development of scholarly independence. Our postdoctoral fellows have been very productive in the program, have found excellent positions, and have built successful careers after their training at Michigan.

Our fellowships are supported by federal National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants awarded to the PSC from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Our program accepts applications each fall (September-December), for fellowships beginning the following fall. Fellowships provide health insurance, stipends to support living expenses, and supplemental childcare support. Fellows devote most of their time to independent research. Positions offer exceptional opportunities for collaboration at the Institute for Social Research on major projects in the U.S. and overseas. The term of fellowship appointment will be for two years, contingent on continued funding. Stipend will be commensurate with experience, based on levels mandated by NIH.

NIH has stated that their ability to help ensure that the nation remains a global leader in scientific discovery and innovation is dependent upon a pool of highly talented scientists from diverse backgrounds who will further NIH’s mission. We encourage applications from US citizens and Permanent Residents who are training grant-eligible and who come from underrepresented backgrounds including African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, persons with a disability, or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. For further information, please see NIH Notice Number: NOT-OD-20-031, “Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity.” Continue reading

Symposium on Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Violence Prevention

Symposium on Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Violence Prevention

Center for the Study and Practice of Violence Reduction, University of Maryland
Tuesday, October 22, 2024

The Center for the Study and Practice of Violence Reduction (VRC) is hosting a symposium on cognitive behavioral interventions (CBI) for violence reduction in order to raise awareness, advance practice, and build capacity in this important area. Cognitive behavioral interventions (CBI) have emerged as a key evidence-informed intervention for addressing community gun violence. That said, the capacity to implement these strategies remains limited, particularly when treating those at the highest risk for such violence, and the costs of such programs can run high.

With the support of the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, the VRC is bringing together nationally recognized experts with a select group of on-the-ground practitioners for a day-long in-person meeting to identify best practices, address implementation challenges, and propose strategies for building capacity while increasing cost-effectiveness. The symposium will result in the publication of a white paper and other resources.
