Organizational Summary Statement:
The EXST Undergraduate Programs (UGP) graduate assistantship is one of the most unique and rewarding experiences on campus. The UGP GA provides academic guidance to incoming students across all campus majors. Throughout the year, the GA builds meaningful relationships with incoming freshmen, student employees, and various staff across campus during summer orientation. GAs play a key role in easing the transition from high school to college, and are encouraged to think creatively to develop new and existing initiatives, events, and presentations to maximize student engagement and success. The GA will also be able to attend a myriad of diverse and exciting events such as the annual UMD Academic Advising Conference.
The GA may also have the opportunity to teach UNIV100, an introductory freshmen course, for additional compensation. After working in this role, the UGP GA will be a competitive candidate in any higher education/student affairs-based career, with expertise in academic advising, student orientation, event planning and data management at a large, prestigious university. The Undergraduate Programs Graduate Assistant may also have the opportunity to assist with other Extended Studies programs including Terp Young Scholars.

Position Description: Graduate Assistant I (GA)

Position Office/Department: Extended Studies (EXST)
Position Title: Program Assistant and Advisor, EXST
Appointment Terms and Compensation: Beginning July 28, 2025 and ending July 24, 2026. The appointment may be extended by mutual agreement of the GA and EXST. Compensation during the full time appointment will be calculated based on the Graduate Assistant I rate. At the discretion of the University, this assistantship may be renewed by written agreement. The GA’s responsibilities will require an average weekly time commitment of 20 hours per week for a full-time appointment. The GA’s work hours must occur between Monday through Friday. The 20-hour per work schedule will be negotiated at the beginning of each fall, winter, spring, and summer semester.
Supervisor and Contact Info: The GA will report to the Coordinator, Freshmen Connection, Extended Studies, 1117 Hornbake Library, 4130 Campus Drive, College Park, MD 20742.
Responsibilities: The GA’s duties shall be that of a Program Assistant and Advisor, EXST Undergraduate Programs and his/her responsibilities include:
- Assist with providing students, prospective and enrolled, with academic advising and information relative to admission, registration, orientation, and advising requirements for EXST Freshmen Connection. Through training, the program assistant will gain a thorough knowledge of General Education and basic degree requirements for all UMD majors, and assist with the enrollment process which includes recruitment, advising on educational goals and academic requirements, reviewing and articulating transfer coursework, providing information on UMD policies and procedures, and providing information on referrals to appropriate UMD resources. The program assistant and advisor will utilize the campus-based computer systems and assist students with these processes.
- Assist with providing organizational, logistical, and implementation support for all EXST Freshmen Connection events and activities, including online and in-person orientations.
- Assist in assessment and evaluation of EXST Freshmen Connection offerings and services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Ability and a commitment to working with people and with diverse populations and communities.
- Ability to organize and execute multiple assignments simultaneously and under time constraints.
- Attention to detail and ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
- Ability to work independently and utilize good judgment in making decisions in accordance with university policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and engagingly present program material to large groups of diverse audiences.
Preferences:
- Previous experience with UMD academic advising and IT systems (including SIS and TerpEngage).
- Experience in event coordination.
- Ability to create and maintain orderly databases and files.
- Ability to analyze and compile data and generate reports.
- Familiarity with online course delivery programs (such as CANVAS/ELMS)
- Competence in word processing, spreadsheets, and database packages.
Additional Benefits:
- Tuition remission (as a Graduate Assistant, up to 10 credits in fall and spring, up to 8 credits in summer, and up to 4 credits in winter). Courses may be taken during Summer Session as long as the course does not meet within the core work hours of 20 hours per week.

- Time-away from duties. A full time (20 hours per week), 12-month assistantship carries the expectation that the GA will be allowed ten workdays (40 hours) of collegially supported absence. This time away from duties must be taken during the current appointment. It may not be accumulated or transferred. It does not include time when UMD is closed. Because colleagues must perform the GA’s responsibilities during an absence, reasonable notice and prior approval by the GA’s supervisor are required. This collegially supported absence may not be used during peak advising periods or orientation.
