NIJ FY25 Graduate Research Fellowship

NIJ seeks applications for the FY25 Graduate Research Fellowship program, which supports doctoral students whose dissertation research is relevant to preventing and controlling crime, advancing knowledge of victimization and effective victim services, or ensuring the fair and impartial administration of criminal or juvenile justice in the United States.

The official applicant is the sponsoring academic institution located in the United States or its territories, and students must apply through their institution. To be eligible, the academic institution must be fully accredited by one of the regional institutional accreditation agencies recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

Academic institutions are eligible to apply only if:

  • The student is currently enrolled in a research doctorate program at the eligible academic institution. Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts degree programs are not eligible.
  • The student’s proposed dissertation research has demonstrable relevance to preventing and controlling crime, advancing knowledge of victimization and effective victim services, or ensuring the fair and impartial administration of criminal or juvenile justice, in the United States.

An applicant may submit more than one application, but each application must propose sponsoring a different student.

Applications will be submitted in a two-step process, each with its own deadline:

  • Submit SF-424 in Grants.gov. Step 1, Grants.gov Application Deadline: April 15, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET
  • Submit the full application including attachments in JustGrants. Step 2, JustGrants Application Deadline: April 22, 2025 at 8:59 p.m. ET

Social Science Research Analyst

NIJ is seeking a Social Science Research Analyst (GS-13) to: 

  • Serve as a Social Science Research Analyst in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Research, Evaluation, Forensics & Technology (OREFT), Office of Criminal Justice Systems (OCJS). 
  • Provide scientific oversight of a research and evaluation portfolio in NIJ’s Office of Criminal Justice Systems (OCJS) including a variety of program grants, research-based grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for a significant segment of a social science or program area with a focus on corrections, policing, courts, and/or the criminal justice system, and related content areas. 
  • Perform analytical research, evaluation, program development, and other tasks in furtherance of portfolios on the criminal justice system. 
  • Develop, implement, analyze, and disseminate a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects that employ different research methods.

Duties
As a Program Analyst, you will:

  • Provide assistance obtaining data and evaluating whether program goals, objectives, and operations are realistic and in line with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Conduct various ad-hoc analyses, prepare small-scale reports, or portions of larger ones, and compile information for management.
  • Assist in preparing briefings for management on major issues.
  • Aid in providing financial oversight to include developing and tracking program budgets, reviewing invoices, and analyzing financial reports.
  • Monitor and evaluate contract performance and interact as needed with contract employees to ensure programmatic needs are met.
  • Conduct elementary research, analyzing and preparing elements of background information on the legal, social, political and economic circumstances of countries where future program projects are planned.
  • Prepare non-complex reports and non-sensitive written materials, as assigned.

Qualifications
To be eligible for this recent graduate position, one of the following requirements must be met:

  1. Recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. (Current students may apply if they are in their final semester, with a graduation date of Fall 2024. Include your expected graduation date on your resume and provide current transcripts. You must receive your degree prior to appointment.)
  2. Veterans unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree, due to military service obligation, have as much as six years after degree completion to apply.
