Department Information
Within this setting, the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology provides a comprehensive examination of justice, crime, and victimization. The program offers both an in-person and fully online Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology that enrolls approximately 900 students across all campuses and a minor with 175 students. The department also houses an in-person and online Master of Science (MS) program in Criminal Justice and Criminology with concentrations in criminal justice/criminology and cybercrime. Further, we offer an Executive MS program in Criminal Justice for law enforcement professionals, which permits them to complete POST-certified coursework in flexible modules. Finally, the department offers an online Graduate Certificate in Cybercrime.

Job Summary
Reporting to the department chair, the assistant professor position requires teaching some combination of courses within our undergraduate and graduate degree programs, developing a sustainable and productive program of research, providing service to the department, college, and university, as well as engaging in student success and professional development initiatives. Job Description:
The Department of Justice, Law & Criminology in the School of Public Affairs at American University invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track positions in criminology beginning in Academic Year 2025-26. The positions will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. For the first position, we are seeking applicants with substantive expertise in race, ethnicity, and policing. For the second position, the search is open regarding specialty, but the Department is especially interested in scholars whose research and teaching interests complement our department’s strengths in areas such as policing, court systems, corrections, victimology, juvenile justice, criminological theory, quantitative and/or qualitative methods. FJC Domestic Violence Prevention Programs Intern

The Domestic Violence (DV) Prevention Programs Internship, through the Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) Volunteer and Internship Program, provides a unique opportunity to learn about domestic violence education and prevention. The DV Prevention Programs Intern will learn about domestic violence, the agencies throughout the County who provide services, the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team (DVFRT) and the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (DVCC), and how coordinated community response works. Interns will be supervised by the FJC Program Manager. The intern will also report to the Manager of DV Prevention Programs for daily tasks. The intern will be assisting with coordinating both the DVFRT and the DVCC meetings, and with Choose Respect Montgomery initiative and facilitating workshops on teen dating violence for 8th-12th graders and help with planning RespectFEST, a spring event. The Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) Client Services Internship provides interns with a unique opportunity to learn about domestic violence intervention on a direct service level. FJC Client Services Interns will learn have a about the FJC model, dynamics of domestic violence, and systems response. Interns will be supervised by the FJC Program Manager, and will assist with reception and intake responsibilities, maintain FJC databases, and will work closely with the Sheriff’s Office Client Assistants. Interns will also be given the opportunity to shadow Client Assistants and observe domestic violence-related civil and criminal court hearings. Continue reading

Legal Services Intern | Montgomery County Family Justice Center

FJC Legal Services Intern

The Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) Legal Services Internship provides interns with a unique opportunity to learn about domestic violence intervention on a direct service level. The Legal Services Intern will gain hands-on experiences in the field of civil law, as it pertains to Protective Orders, Peace Orders and Emergency Evaluation Petitions. The intern will be responsible for the review of legal services referrals and updating databases, observing court proceedings and taking notes, possibly conducting outreach calls to clients to offer legal services, and may assist with reception and intake responsibilities. Interns will be supervised by the FJC Program Manager. The Legal Services Intern will also report to the Lead Legal Services Coordinator for daily tasks.
