It’s been a while ! (June 2024)

It’s been a while! – a lot has happened since I last made a post ! – but we’re still here.

Nathan Renegar is now on board as a graduate student and is working on neuronal culture and an effort to stimulate them in a way to create computational networks! A really new direction for the lab.

Fall 2021 – UMD Classes Return in-Person

August 12, 2021 – With the coming of the Fall 2021 Semester, University of Maryland (College Park) prepares for the cautious return to in-person classes as the pandemic continues.  The increasing spread of the delta-variant of the COVID19 has brought back the indoor masking requirement so it appears (unless things change soon), that we will be teaching with masks on.  How will this work?  Will we be able to have students discussing problems in groups in the classroom like the ‘before times’ ?   Amplified mask microphones?   Darth Vader voice processing?

Univ. Washington’s – Smellicopter

A news article about Melanie Anderson’s (UW) Smellicopter project.  My contribution was the idea of using a fin to passively point the quadcopter upwind instead of trying to use sensors to detect the direction of wind and then actively turn towards the wind.   Go Melanie!

My collaborative input was made possible by an Air Force Center of Excellence (“NIFTI”) grant that involves: U Washington, U Maryland, UC Boulder, Johns Hopkins U, Carnegie-Mellon U, Case-Western Reserve U.

Fall classes restart!

Here at UMD, Fall classes have restarted online! – Since we’re starting this way (in contrast to the crash transition in March 2020) things should go more smoothly.  Some in-person classes are scheduled to begin on campus in a week if the health situation doesn’t deteriorate.  Not my circuits theory course, however, since we can do everything online.  I do miss working with students in person.
