Truman Scholars have outstanding leadership experience, a strong focus on specific public policy goals and activities, and excellent academic performance. US Citizenship is required by April 2024.

Explore AI-Driven Scientific Discovery at the SMILE Lab

Are you passionate about scientific machine learning and ready to work at the cutting edge of AI for Science? The SMILE Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), part of the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS), is inviting applications for a Summer Research Internship focused on computational wave imaging and scientific machine learning.

As a research intern, you’ll collaborate with leading scientists from:

You’ll engage in high-impact research in a dynamic, innovation-driven environment.
Research Focus Areas

  • Real-world challenges in geoscience, energy, and medicine
  • Physics-informed AI and advanced analytics for sustainable and health-focused solutions
  • Generative AI, computational wave imaging, and deep learning framework

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong interest in scientific discovery and solving real-world problems in medical or wave imaging
  • Solid foundation in deep learning, including experience with diffusion models, GANs, CNNs, RNNs, or autoencoders
  • Proficiency with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras)
  • Some prior research experience, ideally with publications in AI or science venue
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong Python programming skills

Education Requirements

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students in:
  • Computational Sciences, Geophysics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Preference given to students interested in pursuing a PhD in Data Science at UNC-Chapel Hill

EcoLatinos is local environmental nonprofit in College Park that is focused on empowering Latinos communities and conservation efforts in Maryland.  They are currently looking for an intern for the summer that can help us with our mission. They are looking for someone that speaks fluent Spanish and is inspired by their mission for conservation.

Environmental & Community Outreach Intern

Location: Chesapeake Bay Region | In-person with flexible scheduling


ecoLatinos is seeking motivated and community-driven college students for a Summer Internship supporting grassroots environmental initiatives in Latino communities. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of climate resilience, watershed protection, environmental justice, and public education—while contributing to meaningful, equity-focused change.

Who We’re Looking For:
We welcome applicants currently pursuing degrees in the following areas:
● Environmental Science
● Environmental Studies
● Ecology or Conservation Biology
● Climate Science or Atmospheric Science
● Sustainability Studies
● Geography or Urban Studies with an Environmental Focus
● Public Health, Sociology, or Communications (with interest in environmental justice or community advocacy)

Intern Responsibilities:
Interns will work alongside the ecoLatinos team and partners to support a variety of projects, including:
● Assisting with community outreach, education workshops, and bilingual event coordination
● Supporting data collection, documentation, and reporting for climate and conservation programs
● Participating in fieldwork and community engagement activities, including planting, cleanups, and public events
● Contributing to communications, social media, and storytelling efforts to amplify local impact
● Helping translate or adapt outreach materials (if bilingual)

Qualifications:
● Currently enrolled in a college or university program
● Preferred majors/minors include those listed above
● Strong interest in environmental advocacy, social justice, or public education
● Ability to work effectively in diverse community settings
● Bilingual in Spanish and English is highly preferred, but not required
● Reliable, organized, and an excellent communicator
● Comfortable with outdoor work and community events

What You’ll Gain:
● Real-world experience working in a bilingual, multicultural environmental nonprofit
● Exposure to climate equity, watershed protection, and policy-based advocacy
