Hollings Scholarship for Environmental Studies – Rising Sophomores!

Attention rising SOPHOMORES studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences or policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility. In the last eight years, 36 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships!

Eligibility requirements: applicants for Hollings Scholarships must be US Citizens; and must have GPA’s of 3.0 or higher each semester and in their major.

Graduate Student USGIF Internship Opportunity

Do you have an interest in geography, the geospatial industry, and/or the intelligence community? Do you have interest in working in a rapidly growing industry? The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) is seeking qualified applicants for its Intern Program for a one-year commitment. Internships may be extended on a case-by-case basis per decision by USGIF Executive Vice President.

The internship will be conducted on a hybrid schedule with one day a week in one of our offices in Herndon, VA or St. Louis, MO, usually on Tuesday. Other attendance in person may be required for USGIF or partner events.

Application Closes: Thursday, October 31, 2024

The Sustainability Internship Scholarship will help off-set expenses associated with an unpaid internship. Scholarship awards ranging from $500-$1,500 are available to help offset expenses.

Eligibility

  • The internship must be related to sustainability or with an organization that aligns with the UN’s organization aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for spring 2024. Dec 2024 graduating seniors are not eligible.

  • A secured fall unpaid internship with a nonprofit or government agency.

  • Supervised by a professional in the field.

  • All class years are welcome to apply.

Office of Sustainability Forest Bathing Event – Oct. 2

Stressed from midterms? Join the Office of Sustainability for a relaxing Forest Bathing event on Wednesday, October 2nd at 12:30 pm! Participate in a guided mindfulness session through a natural landscape, cultivating a sense of presence, and exploring a relationship with other beings. The event is free for students and is in collaboration with the Center for Nature Informed Therapy and the Wekesa Earth Center. 🌱

Join us on Wednesday, October 2nd, from 12:30-1:45 pm! The event will be held at the Wooded Hillock natural area next to the Terrapin Trail Garage. The event is limited to the first 20 students, and more information will be provided upon registration.

Webinar/Info Session about NOAA scholarship programs

The NOAA Office of Education is holding a webinar on October 9th about the EPP/MSI and Hollings undergraduate programs. The registration link is here; flyer below.

Freshmen may especially benefit from the webinar since they’ll be eligible to apply next year, but I think the application period is still open for Hollings so sophomores might want to attend as well!
