CSAWWA Student Opportunity Panel (Open to All)

The UMD Chapter of the Chesapeake Section of the American Water Works Association is hosting a virtual panel featuring experts in water policy, research, and other related fields including a speaker from the EPA. The focus of this event is to

  • provide an informative session where panelists will share insights on their work and experience in the water industry, answering any questions, and
  • offer a valuable networking opportunity.

Panelists will discuss upcoming projects, events, internships, job opportunities, and ways undergraduates at the University of Maryland can engage in research or community involvement that can enhance their educational and career trajectories.

UMD Info Challenge 2025

The annual UMD Info Challenge will take place this year March 1 – 8, 2025. Organized by the Info Challenge Initiative, this event provides an opportunity for college students to compete in solving real-world problems in the areas of data analytics, security, and design – using projects provided by partner organizations.

College students from UMD College Park, UMD Baltimore County, Montgomery College, and the US Naval Academy are eligible to participate. Each year, dozens of faculty and staff from these institutions volunteer their time to support this event as mentors and judges. Past partner organizations that have provided challenge projects and/or valuable financial support include, EY, Amazon Web Services, Google, the National Cancer Institute, Booz Allen Hamilton, The Library of Congress, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and the The U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Do Good Institute (dogood.umd.edu) provides hands-on learning experiences, immersive programs and events, and supportive resources to develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders, social innovators, and civic minded students. Our mission is to ensure that all University of Maryland students graduate equipped and motivated to do good in their careers, their communities, and in the world throughout their lifetimes. The Do Good Institute is still accepting applications for its paid summer internship program, Impact Interns! Impact Interns is a professional development and leadership program that connects passionate and talented students to paid internships with nonprofits and social impact organizations. The program is designed to provide emerging social sector leaders with meaningful opportunities to gain professional experience, develop skills, build a professional network and learn more about working in the nonprofit and social impact sphere. Internships take place in Summer 2025. Internship positions are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Work areas are diverse (communications, research, fundraising, program management) and across different fields (arts, civics, education, environment, health, international development, justice and equity, and social services). Hybrid, remote, and in-person options are available. Science Communications and Outreach Summer Internship

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology is seeking one student for a summer internship that offers an opportunity to work with an environmental and agricultural nonprofit organization. The Hughes Center is affiliated with the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and is located at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, Maryland. This internship is based online with occasional in-person meetings (at least twice but up to four times throughout the 10-week internship) and travel to research site locations for video shoots. Access to reliable transportation is required.

This internship focuses on communications and outreach, specifically with an eye on video content creation and graphic design. The intern will learn how the Hughes Center’s projects and scientific research interact with the state’s agricultural and environmental sustainability and conservation goals, and learn to communicate messages on scientific topics to lay audiences. This internship will provide the opportunity to learn and practice various aspects of public outreach, content creation and distribution, and analytics. The chosen intern will work directly with the Hughes Center’s communications coordinator to develop and execute content plans for the Center’s research and projects.

Duties and expectations:

  • Video Content Creation: The intern will work with the Center’s Communications Coordinator to plan, shoot and edit short and long-format video content based on the Hughes Center’s research projects and partnerships. The ideal candidate is creative, adept with a camera and familiar with video editing software. The videos will be used to grow our YouTube page and social media, as well as website and newsletter article support. Examples of the Hughes Center’s outreach videos can be found here.
  • Graphic Design: The intern will help update the Center’s outreach materials, including the design and creation of infographic handouts and posters for display at conferences and events. Familiarity with Canva or the Adobe suite of graphic design software is preferable.

Compensation: $19.91 per hour, 40 hours per week

Timeline: June 2, 2025 to August 8, 2025

Locations: Virtual with travel
