Virtual Student Sustainability Summit – March 6 & 7

Want to learn about sustainability in various fields? Join us at the Student Sustainability Summit 2025! 
Explore sustainability and its relation to different fields such as AI, architecture, business, and more. This is a fully student-led conference created by students from various universities worldwide. It’s a free event for everyone from any background, location, and knowledge level.

The Office of Sustainability is Hiring!

Hello Green Terps! Are you looking for professional development opportunities and aiming to work in sustainability? Apply for an internship or volunteer position with the Office of Sustainability to enhance your skill set. Learn more about the opportunities below and help foster UMD’s sustainability culture.

Internship Cohort Application
The Office of Sustainability is excited to announce that applications for our 2025-2026 student internship cohort are now open! These are one-year, paid positions for students enrolled in the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters. The positions and their descriptions can be found on our website.

Applications are due by Friday, March 14th, 2025 at 11:59 pm.

USGIF Scholarships Now Open

Applications for 2025/2026 scholarships are officially open! Interested students can apply through this link. Applications will remain open through April 18, 2025.
A few items to note for applicants:

  • Scholarships are available to students studying geospatial, GIS, geography, national security, and other fields that demonstrate their use of geospatial thinking and tools
  • Awards are available for students studying at community colleges, tech or trade schools, and traditional 4-year universities, both degree seekers and certificate students
  • Students need not be U.S. citizens but must be studying at a school in the U.S. or at a USGIF international partner organization
  • USGIF offers general awards, starting at $1,000 for graduating high school seniors and $3,000 for undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students
  • There are 13 sponsored awards with amounts ranging between $5,000 and $15,000

Our website includes an FAQ section and USGIF will offer a virtual information session for applicants on March 20 at 12 p.m. ET, where they can learn about the application process and have questions answered by our education team in real time. We ask that they sign up using this link.
Awardees will be selected and notified by the end of June 2025. Students who receive awards from USGIF are given automatic entry into the poster contest at our annual GEOINT Symposium and attend the event compliments of USGIF.

Save Soil Movie Screening: “Common Ground” (March 12) – be sure to register!

Save Soil is launching Cultivating Change: Save Soil Movie Event (featuring Common Ground film) to raise awareness in our community about the soil degradation crisis and how we can be part of the solution. Cities around the globe will be hosting an event featuring a film titled Common Ground, produced and directed by Kiss The Ground organization. This event will be free and open to the public.
