Project Objectives:
The NourishNet project is an NSF-funded project working on providing more fresh produce and healthier foods to populations who are experiencing food insecurity and working to reduce waste in the food system. Our team is creating an integrated food ecosystem to replace the linear, top-down approach through launching software apps linked with a sensor that provide real-time information and two-way communication within the food insecurity space. The new connectivity is accompanied by assurance of the freshness of donated food, which provides the missing links between consumers, donors, food pantries, and institutions. We are developing an app called FoodLoops that will connect stakeholders in the food donation system, from producers, distributors and consumers who are experiencing food insecurity. This part of the project will be focused on testing the app with different stakeholders, with a specific emphasis on urban farmers, as well as developing education and outreach materials for various stakeholders in the food system. Focused on Prince George’s County as a pilot case study. This is part of a larger project focused on food access, food insecurity and food waste, but the assistant will be working closely with Dr. Caroline Boules on her piece of the puzzle.

To apply: Please email Dr. Caroline Boules, cboules@umd.edu, outlining your interest and your skills that are relevant to this position, and include a current resume, no later than Wednesday June 4, 2025.
