We are seeking PhD/MS/undergraduate students, postdocs, and visiting scholars with relevant experience. If interested, please email Dr. Lin with your CV and transcript.

As a young lab, we highly value and invest in every student and believe that your individual success shapes the future of the lab. You will be working on exciting projects that engage in cutting-edge thermo-fluids science and technology, tackling energy problems that would make significant impacts on our planet and society. You will have the opportunity to publish papers in top journals, present your works at national/international conferences, collaborate with talented researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise, and interact with industry leaders. You will be supported, mentored, and prepared towards your desired career path, whether it is industry, government, or academia.

Graduate students, particularly PhD students, are at the core of the lab. We aim to develop our students to be T-shaped engineers––having broad knowledge and skills, while specializing in one field at depth. We value strong backgrounds in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. The essential skills we emphasize include instrumentation, programming, data analysis and visualization, and science communication (writing, presentation, etc.). These skills will lay the foundation on which you would carve your specialty and advance the science and/or technology of your field. PhD students are fully supported with a competitive stipend, covered tuition, and medical insurance.

M.S. and undergraduate students as well as visiting and postdoctoral scholars are also welcome. Current UMD students may get involved as a volunteer or a paid RA position, depending on the level of commitment and funding availability. Visiting and postdoctoral scholars should contact Dr. Lin directly.

All applicants are encouraged to seek school or external fellowships, in which case we’re happy to help with the application package. For example, UMD undergraduate students may check out the SPIRE and ASPIRE programs. More opportunities can be found in:

PhD and MS applicants must complete the full application from the UMD website. In your application, please choose “Mechanical Engineering” as your Intended Program of Study, select “Thermal, Fluids, and Energy Sciences” as your Area of Interest, and list Dr. Lin as your Faculty of Interest.
