Mental Health First Aid & SNAP Application Assistance Training

Looking for something to do after the holidays? This season, we’d like to remind you of two opportunities to help others (and maybe even yourselves).

We’ve all been through a lot lately, and chances are good that you or someone you know is struggling emotionally right now. Terps take care of each other in this community, which is why we offer Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to any interested students, faculty, and staff. MHFA is an 8-hour certification course that gives you the skills you need to provide appropriate support to someone who may be struggling with a mental health or substance use problem. The course consists of a 2-hour self-paced introductory module, followed by a live 6-hour Skill Development session in person or via Zoom. The course is FREE for undergrads! To learn more or register for a course, visit go.umd.edu/mhfa

We also know that the last two years have had an immense financial impact on many families and individuals. Because of this, we’ve also started offering SNAP Application Assistance Training through the Coalition for Terp Essential Needs (C-TEN) and Maryland Hunger Solutions. All interested students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to attend a short series of sessions that explore the history and context of SNAP, modern day implications (especially for college students), and a thorough step-by-step walk-through for a sample SNAP application. If you want to understand how to navigate the SNAP application process better – for yourself or to help a friend, peer, fellow Terp, or loved one – you can participate in this training free of charge. SNAP Application Assistance Training is FREE to all UMD community members! To learn more, please email dcalandr@umd.edu, or explore at Maryland Hunger Solutions.
