Program Perks Include:

A Fall Seminar Course, taught by expert practitioners, meets once a week, mostly scheduled in the evenings. (Each seminar is cross-listed with Honors).

Connecting you to Internships through our rich network and partnerships with prestigious sites such as foreign embassies, congressional offices, the Maryland General Assembly, federal agencies, Maryland state agencies, and many more!

A Spring Internship for 3-9 credits that you can register for through our program or through your own major’s experiential learning course.

The Voyager Scholarship

The Voyager Scholarship, administered by the Obama Foundation and supported by AIRBNB founder Brian Chesky, supports students planning careers in public service by providing up to $50,000 for college costs AND transformative travel experiences.

Important: The Voyager Scholarship is for students who are Sophomores in Spring 2024, who have demonstrated financial need, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and plan to pursue careers in public service.

Benefits of the Voyager Scholarship:

  • Financial aid up to $50,000: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid to cover remaining tuition and/or living costs for their junior and senior years of college.

  • Students will design their own summer voyage between their junior and senior year of college with a budget of $10,000.

  • 10-year travel stipends: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000.

  • Access to annual Summit Meetings

Eligibility: to apply for Voyager Scholarships students must:

  • Demonstrate financial need (as determined by FAFSA)
  • Be finishing their sophomore year in Spring 2024
  • Plan to enroll full-time as a junior in Fall 2024. 
  • Have four (4) semesters or six (6) quarters of full-time academic coursework remaining before graduating
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
  • Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
  • Be a United States (U.S.) citizen, U.S. permanent resident (holder of a Permanent Resident Card), or an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA).

 

Summer Registration Begins TODAY!

Interested in registering for courses during the summer 2024?

The Summer session runs from May 28th – August 16th. There are 3-week or 6-week sessions available and courses are offered in-person or online.

Current UMD students can register for summer 2024 courses on Testudo starting today, February 20th with no restrictions by major. Prerequisites are still enforced.

Kendall Award Nomination Season Underway…

Do you know of an outstanding colleague here in the USG community who is deserving of special recognition? The floor is now open for nominations for USG’s annual Kendall Service Awards, which are sponsored by the USG Board of Advisors and named for the program’s founders, Camille and Cliff Kendall. Nominations may be made online through March 29 and you have the opportunity to nominate colleagues in any of four categories:

Each Kendall Service Award honoree will receive a substantial cash award, and their names and photos will be prominently displayed in the Priddy Library. The awards will be officially presented later this spring at a campus-wide event.

Free Shuttle From USG to CP for Career Fair

2024 UMD Career & Internship Fair – Feb 23rd – RSVP (UMD @ USG)
USG’s Center for Career Development is sponsoring a FREE 54-seat shuttle bus to transport UMD-Shady Grove students to the Career Fair at UMD this spring.
 
  • STEM-focused – Wednesday, February 21, 11am-4pm – shuttle NOT provided
  • STEM-focused – Thursday, February 22, 11am-4pm – shuttle NOT provided
  • All Industries – Friday, February 23, 11am-4pm – shuttle provided

How do you secure your spot on a bus on February 23? RSVP to this form. Please be aware that RSVPing does not guarantee you a seat, as only 54 seats are available and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. A waitlist will be created; if you are placed on the waitlist, you will be notified if a seat becomes available.

February 23 – Trip Logistics

BUS DEPARTURE FROM SHADY GROVE: 11:00 AM (The bus will arrive at SG at 10:45 am and will depart at 11:00 am). The bus will pick up students in Lot 5 (the far side of Building 3 in the small parking lot across from the BSE Building). We anticipate the bus will arrive at UMD around 11:45 am. Please ensure you arrive at Lot 5 no later than 10:50 am to board the bus. The bus will depart promptly at 11:00 am.

BUS DEPARTURE FROM UMD: 4:00 PM (Don’t be late!) The bus will depart UMD promptly at 4:00 pm, with a drop-off at Shady Grove expected around 4:45 pm.

We strongly encourage all participants to dress in professional, business casual attire and to bring several copies of your most up-to-date resume to share with employers and internship providers during the fair.
