J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship

The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation established the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship in June 2016 to provide merit-based scholarships for students in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. It is the donor’s preference that this scholarship be awarded to students who intend to pursue a career in law enforcement and have demonstrated leadership qualities. The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation is committed to promoting good citizenship through the appreciation of our government in the United States. One of J. Edgar Hoover’s ideals was the committed belief in meritocracy through higher education.

Multiple scholarships ($1,500 each) will be awarded to high achieving CCJS rising juniors and seniors. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of demonstrated strength in CCJS coursework, merit, and leadership ability. Preference will be given to students who have an interest in and are eligible for law enforcement careers.  Recipients of the scholarships will be recognized in the College’s annual Scholarship Recognition Program Booklet, shared with BSOS Donors.

Applicants for the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Declared as a CCJS major
  • Rising junior or senior standing for the 2025-2026 academic year
  • Will register as a full-time student for the Fall 2025 semester and in good academic standing
  • U.S. Citizen

Summer 2025 Criminal Investigator Internship – Major Crimes Unit, Bilingual Spanish Assistant Investigator
Location: Fairfax, VA

Who Are We?
The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is a state agency that represents indigent
people charged with criminal offenses throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The office is
comprised of state attorneys, mitigation specialists, administrative staff, and investigators. Our
investigative division works on Fairfax County criminal cases and is located at the Fairfax
County Public Defender’s Office (4103 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA).


What Do Investigators Do?
Investigators assist public defender attorneys by gathering facts and evidence that will help
them in their cases. Interns will assist investigators with their caseload, which consists o
serious felony cases, including murder, sex crimes, robbery, assault, etc. We are responsible to
look for the facts.

Additional Duties:
Interview clients and witnesses (in jail, the office, or in private homes often using bilingual Spanish speaking skills)Conduct research, review the evidence, and retrieve recordsWrite detailed investigative reportsAttend court proceedingsAssist in any additional trial preparation tasks
Internship Requirements:
You have an interest in, and some familiarity with, the criminal justice system (through coursework and or other practical experience)You are comfortable with conducting fieldwork that brings you out into the community and into people’s homes (you will always be accompanied by your assigned investigator)Must have availability to work 2 to 3 full days (9:00 am- 5:00 pm) a week and some occasional afterhours workYou are a good communicator and will maintain professionalism even when interacting with rude or difficult peopleYou have a positive and willing attitudePreferred for proficiency in Spanish language
This is a hands-on internship opportunity, requires you to be at work physically, and is not a telework opportunity. This is a non-paid internship, but eligible for college credit.

The Arraignment Courtroom Clerk supports the operations of the Criminal Division and is permanently assigned to the Criminal Arraignment Courtroom.  The Arraignment Courtroom Clerk is an essential position that is required to work late hours, holidays, weekends and when there are weather related closures. This position covers a high volume calendar by which speed and attention to detail are necessary in order to be successful.
DutiesThe Arraignment Courtroom Clerk will be expected to perform the following duties in a timely and competent manner, exercise sound and professional judgment, work independently and cooperatively, and communicate in a clear and courteous manner:Provides accurate case information and assistance in a prompt and courteous manner.Manages courtroom operations to ensure that appropriate personnel and parties are present for proceedings and that the courtroom is ready prior to calling the judge into the courtroom; calls the courtroom to order as needed.Administers oaths to jurors, witnesses, and interpreters; takes notes and generates necessary paperwork in accordance with the rulings of the courts; inputs data as needed to ensure complete and accurate court records.Assists in the jury selection process, to include the roll call of all jurors, recording to the number of strikes taken by each attorney, maintaining a list of all jurors selected, and communicating with the Juror Office, as required.Submits requests and ensures the presence of language access interpreters and court reporters as needed.Accurately maintains the official court record of court proceedings in a timely manner; prepares minutes, and records appearances of court participants.Receives, marks, maintains records and temporarily assumes custody of evidence and exhibits until returned to a filer.Enters case dispositions, judgments, postponements, fines, and costs ordered by the judge into the court’s case management system.Prepares judicial orders, bench warrants, commitments, judgments, notices and other legal documents and forms as required, directed, or pursuant to the court’s ruling and provides copies to parties in compliance with the business processes and standard operating procedures.Acts as a primary liaison to the assigned judicial officer for purposes of conducting proceedings, provides technical assistance and serves as an administrative resource in the courtroom.Participates in training to ensure professional development and competency to provide services in all case types; assists in cross-training co-workers as needed or directed.Provides coverage for courtrooms and calendars in other divisions and offices as needed.

At Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, your knowledge and service in areas such as immigrants and refugees, mental health, social work, employment and adult education, legal and financial services, health care, food assistance, shelter and housing, developmental disabilities and prison outreach can make a profound difference in the lives of many. The Reentry Coordinator assumes a lead role in coordinating activities of the Prison Outreach program in Prince Georges County, MD, working closely with the state probation and parole office, Reentry Court, inmates in the county jails, and state and federal prisons, and other community-based organizations to assist men and women returning to Prince Georges County after incarceration. The position recruits, trains, and engages mentors who volunteer to support program participants as they transition back into the community.
