Description:
The Crime Gun Intelligence Specialist (CGIS) Level I position provides support services related the ATF Crime Gun Intelligence (CGI) Process. 2026 AAPD Summer Internship Program

AAPD’s Internship Program places students and recent graduates with disabilities in paid internships. Interns build leadership skills, explore career opportunities, and connect with the disability community.

For Summer 2026, AAPD will offer a hybrid internship program with some interns joining remotely from across the country while some interns will be based in Washington D.C. Interns will work full-time for 32 hours a week, for 10 weeks during the summer.

Interns will:

  • Participate in a 1-week orientation to prepare for their internship, meet with the cohort, and learn about the disability rights movement
  • Work at their a paid internship program Monday – Thursday
  • Participate in weekly programming on Fridays
  • Attend events and network on Capitol Hill, conferences, community events, briefings, and more
  • Connect one-on-one with a mentor who provides career guidance
  • Join virtual community events

The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) advocates for accessible, compassionate care for survivors, the prevention of sexual assault, and accountability for all offenders. MCASA actively works to end sexual violence in the State of Maryland through professional training, public outreach, public policy advocacy, technical assistance, and legal services.

Through hands-on learning responsibilities, MCASA’s program interns are engaged in the important effort to end rape, child sexual abuse, and the full continuum of sexual violence including campus sexual assault and human sex trafficking. They are exposed to the latest thinking in the field of sexual assault prevention and response through webinars and trainings, professional meetings, and written resource materials. Program interns also come away with practical knowledge about a statewide nonprofit organization’s strategies for office management, internal and external communications, professional training, and public outreach.  

A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required. Interns are encouraged to work with their academic institutions to seek credit. This is a fully remote internship. 

Intern Objectives

  • Develop and expand knowledge regarding sexual violence and policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and abuse.
  • Develop ability to write and format professional documents such as letters, fact sheets, website content, and newsletter articles.
  • Learn about event management by assisting with logistics coordination for professional training sessions and fundraising events.
  • Enhance research skills by completing written projects regarding sexual violence.
  • Develop an understanding of nonprofit membership development and engagement by updating and maintaining electronic database records.
  • Participate in public outreach by attending events and staffing community information fairs.
  • Become familiar with a varied-pace office environment that juggles both immediate and longer-term projects.
  • Contribute to development of office resources on specific topics.

  • Be genuinely concerned about sexual violence issues and have a passion and desire to make a difference

This position partners with operational departments to develop recommended corrective actions required to effectively mitigate risks. We are looking for someone who works well within a team, has great communication and writing skills, and has a consistent interest in investigating and improving investigation development.

SUMMARY:This is an introductory, preparatory and training opportunity for college and graduate students designed to provide hands-on and practical transit industry work experience. Areas include but are not limited to: Bus and/or Rail Operations, Safety/Emergency Management, Engineering, Police, Information Technology, City/Urban Planning and General business functions. The assignments are on a temporary basis not to exceed thirteen (13) weeks of summer employment. Student interns may rotate to various departments based on their major in college/university and/or the respective departmental assignment.  The student intern is supervised by an appropriate Executive or designee.

MAJOR DUTIES:Duties will vary dependent on the assigned department. General duties may include activities in which the student intern: Compiles, reviews and analyzes data.  Operates a personal computer to verify, input and correct data required for producing reports.Researches data for and assists in the preparation of management, operations, technical and administrative reports.  Utilizes management memoranda, fiscal and operations reports and data to complete assignments.Produces tangible work product specific to the assigned department to include presentations, reports, correspondence, graphic representation of data and/or project plans.Reviews reports to identify problems based upon standard criteria and guidance from supervisors; recommends solutions as instructed.Participates in training sessions related to various functions performed by department to which assigned; attends appropriate Authority, departmental and office meetings, etc., in order to gain exposure to transit functions.Participates in and/or leads departmental meetings, working sessions, etc.

The Opportunity

The Justice and Safety Division’s (JSD) mission is to drive change to establish safe communities and an equitable and effective criminal legal system. We conduct objective, rigorous, interdisciplinary research, evaluation, and policy analysis and deliver data-driven recommendations, training, and technical assistance. In carrying out our research, we seek to center the voices, experiences, and perspectives of the people, practitioners, and communities most affected by crime and the criminal legal system. JSD seeks a Policy Assistant (Step 1/ Policy Management track) who can work collaboratively on projects covering multiple touchpoints in the criminal legal system, including policing, courts, corrections, reentry, and victim services, as needed. The position’s core responsibility will be to provide detail oriented, organized project management for various projects in the division, with some opportunity for research and analysis as available.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support and collaborate with colleagues within the Justice and Safety Division (JSD) and across Urban to prepare internal and public products such as literature reviews, memos, reports, policy briefs, blog posts, webinars, and social media.
  • Support planning and development of presentations, technical assistance, and trainings delivered by Urban staff for practitioners, policymakers, and other external audiences, including developing talking points, writing background memos, composing PowerPoint presentations, and creating training materials.
  • Conduct background research on a range of topics by identifying, interpreting, and synthesizing both quantitative (statistical and survey data) and qualitative information (literature scans, review of relevant federal/local policies).
  • Support a range of data collection activities including planning for and implementing field work/site visits, focus groups, interviews, and surveys.
  • Provide project management support by scheduling team meetings and coordinating logistics; drafting emails, agendas, talking points, and presentations; taking notes and identifying action items and next steps.
  • Coordinate and support logistics and content development for convenings, webinars, trainings, and public events, including drafting invitations, conducting background research, developing speaker prep materials, and supporting outreach to presenters and participants.
  • Oversee logistical tasks for proposal development and contribute to substantive content.

Who You Are:

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in criminology, sociology, public policy, or a related field.
  • Preferably have demonstrated experience in a relevant professional setting, such as a nonprofit, philanthropic, government, or advocacy organization.
  • Be exceptionally well-organized, highly motivated, and able to work effectively on multiple projects at once.
  • Have excellent attention to detail, a willingness to adapt to changes in work assignments, and a nimbleness in changing course quickly.
  • Have familiarity with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Proficiency in a statistical software package like Stata, SPSS, or R is a plus.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate interest in criminal justice policy through their academic major, prior work experience, involvement in volunteering programs, leadership positions in academic and/or extra-curricular settings or public policy-related internship. Experience in fast-paced work environments that engage with federal, state, local policymakers, philanthropic and/or non-profit leaders is a plus.
