Scope of work:  IRC’s Immigration Department in Silver Spring, Maryland, provides high quality, low-cost immigration services, including filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e., green cards), work Authorization, naturalization, and family reunification for a broad range of clients. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for going through client immigration documents and assisting clients with requirements for consultations and application sessions with legal staff. 
  • Answer client questions regarding immigration services, and, when necessary, refer clients to the appropriate IRC staff member. 
  • General administrative support, including tracking, filing, and mailing relevant documents, applications, and notices of action. 
  • Under the guidance of the supervising Immigration Services Manager, assist in putting client information updates in Lolly Law database. 
  • Assist clients with document translation, authentication, presentation and completion. 
  • Provide special assistance to clients with particular needs. 
  • Promote the IRC’s immigration department through online and local networks. 
  • Research immigration issues, polices and programs 
  • Build partnerships with local agencies to improve systems of providing immigration services.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Learn about immigration services available to newcomers. 
  • Gain experience in online databases such as Lolly Law and application processing. 
  • Experience working in outreach to support building partnerships. 

Qualifications: 

  • Working towards a college degree related to international relief, humanitarian work or refugee law related subjects. Must be current student or within 12 months of schooling.*  
  • Passion to work with  limited-English speaking refugees (second language proficiency a plus, Spanish strongly preferred, also seeking French, Dari, and Pashto)  
  • Interest and/or work experience on U.S Immigration law and outreach knowledge (Prior experience in immigration is a plus). 
  • Excellent research, language, database management, and record keeping skills.

Their work varies and pulls on the skills of an investigator and paralegal, and will often involve working closely with and supporting local organizers and their campaigns. The Need  

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking Investigations & Law Enforcement Development Interns & Fellows. 

Investigations and Law Enforcement Development Interns and Fellows support IJM staff in liaising with local law enforcement officials to ensure that they intervene to rescue identified victims and arrest and charge the identified perpetrators. Depending on your level of experience, your role may involve some of the following responsibilities as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Field Office Director or Supervisor.  

  • Assist with writing and editing reports of investigation activities;  
  • Organize and track progress of ongoing operations, including the operation stage and expenses incurred for each operation;  
  • Create intelligence reports that organize and analyze data;  
  • Maintain department databases and files;  
  • Assist in the development of protocols, procedures and best practices for the Investigations department;  
  • Assist with organizing, administering and documenting ongoing training in Investigations;  
  • Research future equipment needs and purchases;  
  • Operate and maintain investigative equipment;  
  • Facilitate investigations through logistical support as needed;  
  • Develop and train Investigations Staff in investigations techniques;  
  • Assist the Investigations staff in case development and case management;  
  • Assist in the review of case investigations and provide appropriate feedback;  
  • Compile criminal intelligence, enter the information in the intelligence database and analyze the intelligence to provide investigative leads to the Investigations Staff; and  
  • Assist in operations planning, risk assessment and risk management.

2026 AAPD Summer Internship Program

AAPD’s Internship Program places students and recent graduates with disabilities in paid internships. Interns build leadership skills, explore career opportunities, and connect with the disability community.

For Summer 2026, AAPD will offer a hybrid internship program with some interns joining remotely from across the country while some interns will be based in Washington D.C. Interns will work full-time for 32 hours a week, for 10 weeks during the summer.

Interns will:

  • Participate in a 1-week orientation to prepare for their internship, meet with the cohort, and learn about the disability rights movement
  • Work at their a paid internship program Monday – Thursday
  • Participate in weekly programming on Fridays

The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) advocates for accessible, compassionate care for survivors, the prevention of sexual assault, and accountability for all offenders. MCASA actively works to end sexual violence in the State of Maryland through professional training, public outreach, public policy advocacy, technical assistance, and legal services.

Through hands-on learning responsibilities, MCASA’s program interns are engaged in the important effort to end rape, child sexual abuse, and the full continuum of sexual violence including campus sexual assault and human sex trafficking. Program interns also come away with practical knowledge about a statewide nonprofit organization’s strategies for office management, internal and external communications, professional training, and public outreach.  

A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required. Interns are encouraged to work with their academic institutions to seek credit. This is a fully remote internship. 

Intern Objectives

  • Develop and expand knowledge regarding sexual violence and policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and abuse.
  • Develop ability to write and format professional documents such as letters, fact sheets, website content, and newsletter articles.
  • Learn about event management by assisting with logistics coordination for professional training sessions and fundraising events.
  • Enhance research skills by completing written projects regarding sexual violence.
  • Develop an understanding of nonprofit membership development and engagement by updating and maintaining electronic database records.
  • Participate in public outreach by attending events and staffing community information fairs.
  • Become familiar with a varied-pace office environment that juggles both immediate and longer-term projects.
  • Contribute to development of office resources on specific topics.

Qualifications 

  • Be genuinely concerned about sexual violence issues and have a passion and desire to make a difference
  • Have a desire to learn about non-profit organizations and practices
  • Be organized, have a strong attention to detail, and be able to complete projects independently
  • Be computer and internet savvy: experience and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred
  • Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

This internship is particularly relevant for students pursuing degrees in Communications, Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, or Women’s Studies, but we welcome applications from those in any field.

Compensation
This internship is unpaid.  We encourage interns to seek academic credit or stipends when possible.
