Study: Predicting Interest in Law Enforcement

Title of Study: Predicting Interest in Law Enforcement

Introduction: You are being invited to participate in an anonymous research study conducted by Aubrey Powell (a doctoral student in The University of Akron’s Counseling Psychology Program) under the direction of Dr. Margo Gregor (faculty in the Department of Psychology at The University of Akron).

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the motivating factors for choosing a career in law enforcement. We would like to collect responses from at least 150 people. Procedures: If you agree to participate, you will be asked a series of questions about your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs for a future career in law enforcement. This will take you about 20 minutes.

To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, a US citizen, and pursuing a career in law enforcement. All eligible participants are encouraged to take part! I am especially interested in hearing from individuals with diverse identities, including different racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, socioeconomic, religious, and ability backgrounds. Understanding a variety of perspectives will help provide a more comprehensive picture of what factors motivate people most. After completing the survey, you have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win one of three $50 Amazon gift cards.

If you’re interested, please fill out this survey. If you have any questions about this study, please feel free to email Aubrey Powell (arp135@uakron.edu) or Dr. Margo Gregor at (mgregor@uakron.edu).

This is an opportunity for a Fall 2025 independent study at 2 or 3 credits (6 or 9 hours per week), depending on the student’s availability. The student needs to have completed all the requirements to be eligible for an independent study, including having taken CCJS300: https://ccjs.umd.edu/undergraduate/independent-studies

Any interested undergraduate students should email Dr. Wade Jacobsen (wcj@umd.edu) with a 200-word statement about why they are interested in the opportunity and how it would help them in their academic and career goals. They should also be prepared to show evidence that they meet the requirements for an independent study. These applications are due by Friday, September 12 at 12pm EST.

Any questions may also be directed to Dr. Jacobsen (wcj@umd.edu).
