Request for Role Playing Volunteers for U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Advanced Training Facility

U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Advanced Training Facility, in Harpers Ferry, WV, is looking for at least 5-6 student volunteers to play various roles in support of mock crime scene processing.

For students who are interested in careers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or law enforcement in general, this will be an excellent opportunity to meet and network with experienced agents and learn about CBP careers while assisting with the training of newly hired agents.

Depending on the session, breakfast and possibly lunch will be provided, but there will be no reimbursement for travel or other expenses. Students should be U.S. citizens and be able to be outdoors for approximately 2-3 hours.

These internships require a commitment of 10 to 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 100 hours over the course of the semester. Spring interns must work on-site at least 50 percent of the time. Interns will collaborate with their supervisors to determine their work schedules.

This position works as a part of the Court Services Unit. This position is located in the Fairfax County Courthouse and is under the general supervision of the Victim Services Unit Program Manager. Provides trauma-informed supportive services to victims and witnesses of juvenile crime in the jurisdiction of Fairfax County, Fairfax City, and the towns of Herndon and Vienna, who are involved in the criminal justice system of Fairfax County. 

Receives case assignments and investigates the nature of the offense to determine the needs of the client. Contacts victims to provide crisis intervention, resource and referral, safety planning, and victims’ rights information. Explains the criminal justice process and provides notification of future court dates. Makes appropriate referrals to other agencies or community resources. Provides courtroom advocacy to victims and witnesses, and orients clients on the court process. Collaborates with stakeholders to provide consistent and thorough information and services to clients. Provides victim impact and shoplifting prevention classes to diverted and adjudicated offenders under the jurisdiction of the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Provides restitution information to Court Services Unit Staff, victims of crime and defendants. Provides case management and conducts community outreach, as needed.

Victims Services

  • Provides supportive services to victims and witnesses of crime involved in the criminal justice system including emotional support, financial assistance, counseling, and victim agency referrals;
  • Maintains on-going contact/communication with victims and witnesses during investigation and judicial proceedings, and provides notifications of investigative activity or case developments as needed;
  • Provides court accompaniment to crime victim and witnesses for all court proceedings in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations, General District and Circuit Courts;
  • Reduces delays in bringing cases to court by assisting in determining availability of victims and witnesses;
  • Responds to call-outs to crime scenes and other locations to provide immediate crisis intervention and support, refers clients to related supportive services and agencies;
  • Operates a county vehicle to provide the effective delivery of services to victims and witnesses including transporting victims and witnesses to court hearings, commonwealth’s attorneys meetings and other court related appointments;
  • Provides assistance by administering and providing services designed to enhance coordination among agencies operating within the criminal justice system;
  • Works with and assists the officers and detectives within their district station assignment or the criminal investigations bureau with the proper victim services and referrals;
  • Encourage citizen awareness and participation through public information and education.

Crime Analyst II | Fairfax County Police Department

Works with the Fairfax County Police Department to provide advanced/specialized crime analysis work to achieve the department’s mission to protect the community by reducing crime. Information Session, NSF Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 5:30-6:30 pm ET, the Office of Undergraduate Research will hold a Zoom information session for undergraduate students regarding summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). If you work with students who might be interested in learning more about these programs, we would be grateful for your assistance in sharing information about this event with them.

Run by universities, colleges, and research organizations throughout the United States, NSF REU programs provide paid summer research opportunities to undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields (including social, behavioral, and economic science fields). The NSF limits eligibility for these programs to undergraduates who are US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. 

The information session will provide an overview of these programs and information on how to locate and apply to programs running in summer 2025.
