This is an entry-level clerical position performing case processing duties and responsibilities daily which entails a high volume of data entry work multiple case types to include, but not limited to civil, criminal, and traffic court cases of the Montgomery County District Court. Greets the general public and court related personnel and assists with information about cases, proper completion of court forms, or explaining court policies and procedures by telephone or in person. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Receive filings/new cases, check to ensure filings meet requirements of rules and fees associated with filing. Distribute filings to appropriate desk/queue. Assist customers by telephone and at office counter, provide information within office guidelines. Assist and perform clerk duties in other sections, as needed.
Retrieve files from file room for pleadings. File cases that have been updated.
Other duties as assigned to include, but not limited to, providing backup cashiering.

You will be a part of the team that reports on court cases, analyzes data and identifies violent crime trends.
This is not a coffee grabbing internship. From Day 1, you will learn and hone journalism techniques that will enable you to help D.C. Witness make a difference. So many community members are craving the information you will provide.
During the internship, interns may:
Track violent crime cases;
Attend court hearings/trials on violent crimes;
Write brief and long-form stories on violent crime cases, data and trends;
Research court documents and analyze crime-reduction policies;
Assist with interviewing families of defendants and victims;
Interview court employees;
Participate in multimedia projects; and
Other administrative responsibilities.
This internship is unpaid but college credit may be offered. D.C. Witness is a news site (www.dcwitness.org) that provides transparency on homicide and non-fatal shooting cases in Washington, D.C. The site does this by collecting data on cases from date-of-death/incident to judicial resolution, reporting on court proceedings, and conducting interviews.

SCOPE OF WORK
The Anti-Trafficking Intern will work in close coordination with the case management teams to serve survivors of human trafficking who are struggling to navigate various systems to access resources and services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess needs and priorities and work directly with IRC clients to create a service plan and deliver on-going case management.
Assist with outreach efforts by drafting, editing, and distributing informational materials such as flyers, fact sheets, presentations, and local resources.
Contribute to partnership development by researching agencies, networks, and service providers aligned with program goals and impact.
Guide clients to various appointments including but not limited to appointments with lawyers, local law enforcement, health care and public benefit providers.
Engage in community mapping to identify and refer clients to external resources. Engage in community outreach activities to identify potential clients and increase IRC visibility.
Assist in maintaining quality control of files.
Other tasks as assigned.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Intern will gain case management experience by interacting with and assisting case manager on support for vulnerable clients.
Intern will acquire knowledge of the US healthcare system.
Intern will learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how to capture data to improve services.
Intern will learn or improve cross cultural communication skills.
Qualifications
Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.
Ability to work in-person required.
Reliable access to a personal vehicle, valid US driver’s license, and active insurance policy preferred.
Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Organized with attention to detail.
Excellent communication and writing skills.
An interest in humanitarian issues, trafficking survivor services and related issues
Proven ability to work independently and as a team member in a global setting.
Willingness to use public transportation with clients in order to orient clients to buses, etc.
Proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, or French preferred.
