Team members should be assigned in advance to one or the other of the concurrent events in each pair of concurrent events. For example, “Reactions in Action” and “Weighing by Redox” are concurrent events for the first-year team. A maximum of three students from a team may do an event. At the Chemathon, teams will receive a schedule showing the order in which they will do the events. Only nonprogrammable calculators are allowed for the events.
A team does not have to compete in each event to receive awards, but competing in all the events increases the chances of receiving one of the grand prizes.
All participating students are expected to compete with a “safety first” attitude. Judges will disqualify any team displaying unsafe conduct in a laboratory event. All students, judges, teachers, and observers must bring and wear their own protective goggles and lab aprons (or lab coats) during the laboratory events. All persons in the lab rooms must wear shoes without open spaces; sandals and open-toe shoes are not acceptable.
The overall Chemathon team honors are based on a maximum of 180 points: nine events at 20 points each, with no events dropped. The competition of the first-year teams will be independent of that of the second-year teams. If a team skips one or more events, it will still compete for honors within the events it enters.
Follow directions to the chemistry building at the University of Maryland in College Park. Registration will be in the lobby at the west end of the building, just inside the entrance. Participants may bring a bag lunch or use one of the food services that will be available on-campus for Maryland Day. There are soft drink machines in the chemistry building. You will be able to store lunches and event equipment in a secured laboratory room. Please make sure all items are labeled.
