The Do Good Institute (dogood.umd.edu) provides hands-on learning experiences, immersive programs and events, and supportive resources to develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders, social innovators, and civic minded students. The Do Good Institute is still accepting applications for its paid summer internship program, Impact Interns! Impact Interns is a professional development and leadership program that connects passionate and talented students to paid internships with nonprofits and social impact organizations. The program is designed to provide emerging social sector leaders with meaningful opportunities to gain professional experience, develop skills, build a professional network and learn more about working in the nonprofit and social impact sphere. Internships take place in Summer 2025. Internship positions are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Work areas are diverse (communications, research, fundraising, program management) and across different fields (arts, civics, education, environment, health, international development, justice and equity, and social services). Science Communications and Outreach Summer Internship

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology is seeking one student for a summer internship that offers an opportunity to work with an environmental and agricultural nonprofit organization. The Hughes Center is affiliated with the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and is located at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, Maryland. This internship is based online with occasional in-person meetings (at least twice but up to four times throughout the 10-week internship) and travel to research site locations for video shoots. Access to reliable transportation is required.

This internship focuses on communications and outreach, specifically with an eye on video content creation and graphic design. The intern will learn how the Hughes Center’s projects and scientific research interact with the state’s agricultural and environmental sustainability and conservation goals, and learn to communicate messages on scientific topics to lay audiences. This internship will provide the opportunity to learn and practice various aspects of public outreach, content creation and distribution, and analytics. The chosen intern will work directly with the Hughes Center’s communications coordinator to develop and execute content plans for the Center’s research and projects.

Duties and expectations:

  • Video Content Creation: The intern will work with the Center’s Communications Coordinator to plan, shoot and edit short and long-format video content based on the Hughes Center’s research projects and partnerships. The ideal candidate is creative, adept with a camera and familiar with video editing software. The videos will be used to grow our YouTube page and social media, as well as website and newsletter article support. Examples of the Hughes Center’s outreach videos can be found here.
  • Graphic Design: The intern will help update the Center’s outreach materials, including the design and creation of infographic handouts and posters for display at conferences and events. Familiarity with Canva or the Adobe suite of graphic design software is preferable.

Compensation: $19.91 per hour, 40 hours per week

Timeline: June 2, 2025 to August 8, 2025

Locations: Virtual with travel

Summer 2025 Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Internship Program

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. (Hughes Center) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are seeking law and undergraduate student applicants interested in careers in agriculture, environmental conservation, forestry, and/or policy for the 2025 Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Summer Internship program. Multiple students will be selected for this six-week internship, which includes a competitive salary and the opportunity to interact with leaders from the agricultural and environmental communities, as well as state agencies. The internship will begin with an orientation session at Wye Research Center, and the interns will attend periodic meetings at Wye. The remainder of the time, the interns will work virtually or attend meetings offsite.

The internship will introduce you to a number of complex natural resource issues, including but not limited to, Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts, agricultural practices, and local food production. During the course of the internship, you will meet diverse stakeholders and engage in the complex interaction between the agricultural and the environmental conservation and policy communities. You will be introduced to legislators and staff at state agencies as you work to resolve challenges. The internship is funded by organizations seeking to build leaders who are able to appreciate all sides of complex issues and develop solutions that consider environmental, economic, and industry needs as well as the needs of policymakers.

Interns will:

  • Work with Hughes Center and ALEI’s staff on research projects related to current agriculture, environmental, and forestry issues;
  • Participate in the multidisciplinary activities of the Hughes Center;
  • Attend regional leadership meetings for agriculture and natural resources;
  • Have the opportunity to engage with researchers, state officials and agencies, environmental, and agricultural leaders;
  • Support ALEI’s staff in the creation and administration of legal education resources and programs;
  • Support Hughes Center and ALEI staff in developing proposals for future projects; and
  • Enhance their research, communication, public speaking, and time management skills.

Interns must:

  • Be a licensed driver with their own reliable transportation; and
  • Be able to attend regional events throughout the summer. Some weekend or evening hours may be required.

Compensation:  Interns will be paid $19.91 an hour for a 40-hour work week.
