Experiencing Differences
As Kanye West once said oh so poetically, “just touched down in London-town.” I have safely landed in the United Kingdom and my first 10 days have been incredible. I am beyond lucky to call this beautiful city my home for the next few months.
In my first 10 days here, after orientation and becoming somewhat acquainted to the area near my apartment, I noted several differences. The food, the people and the attitude. However, in this post, I will be focusing on the people and the attitude (I believe that they go hand in hand).
First, this may seem the most obvious but the English do have accents. * Gasp * But I am focusing on the slang in this case. I have met several people from the U.K. and England, in particular, so far. For example, “quid” is the equivalent to “buck.”
But more importantly, despite the colloquialism being different, the way of life is different. Coming from the northeast, I am used to the hustle and fast-paced lifestyle. London, after 10 days of living here, I noticed that the people are calmer. Trust me, this is a great thing. The architecture of this city is amazing, the black cabs whizzing by on the street are so unique and the people who roam the streets are diverse. I have only seen a little bit of this city so far, loving every moment. See you next time!
