International Dorms at Yonsei University

The dorm is the first impression I had of the school when I first arrived. However, since Yonsei is a Christian school, dorms here are much different to those back at UMD.

There are two international dorms here: SK Global and International House. SK Global is a co-ed dorm while International House is females only. Since I live in SK Global, that will be the dorm I will be talking about.

The first difference I encountered was the gender separation.

Like the dorms back at UMD, the floors are separated by gender. However, there are a lot more limitations than back at home. Opposite genders are only allowed on other floors during certain hours of the day. Even the laundry rooms are separated by gender.

How do they enforce this you may wonder? We do have a RA, but unlike the RA’s in UMD, we do not have one per floor but instead one per dorm. The RA is where we go if we have any questions or concerns. Unless you visit the RA, it is very unlikely that the RA will even know your name.

So, if the RA is not the one enforcing these regulations, then who is?

The answer to that is not who, but what. There are CCTVs (or security cameras as we call it) everywhere in the building. It will catch you if you do anything wrong in the dormitory. So, do not try it. Just kidding. Instead of monitoring us, the purpose of the CCTV is more for our protection. Due to the large number of CCTV in the dorm, the strong security ensures that all the students who live here are safe.

For any student who is considering studying abroad at this school, I would definitely recommend staying in the dorm because it is safer, you get to meet new people, and it’s less commuting to your classes!

The picture shows the main entrance of SK Global. The entrance is actually on the B2 level, so if you live on the first floor, don’t be discouraged because you’re not actually on the ground level.
