Spain: Timeless Design
Today in Barcelona the class ventured out into the Sant Pau Art Nouveau site and the Gothic Quarter. Both of these architectural masterpieces are staples here in Barcelona, and are considered to be timeless – despite how old they may be.
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau was an amazingly constructed hospital campus, surrounded by many artistic choices inspired by nature and religion. The beauty of this hospital gave its patients the feeling of hope that was needed during a time where medical advances were not available to save the hundreds of thousand people who were dying of the diseases we have vaccinations for today. While the hospital has been retired into a museum in the early 2000s, the feeling of hope and recovery remains prevalent in this architectural masterpiece due to such design choices.
The Gothic Quarter’s timeless design was originally constructed during the rule of the Roman Empire. Since the fall of the Romans, the Gothic Quarter has been able to evolve into places of leisure, commerce and education throughout Spanish history. The dimensions of physical, emotional and logical choices play a huge part in whether or not something can become considered timeless. Who knows what ideas of today will be considered timeless in the future of our lifetime? In the end, understanding the history and influence of those who have already accomplished such a feat can help guide today’s generation into making something truly meaningful in this world.
