Post Cape Town – A New Way of Learning and Thinking
In our modern-day society, we have been conditioned to learn in a very specific way. We go to classes, we take notes, we look over the notes, and then we take a test in order to see how well we retained the information. When we started this course, to be frank, many of us felt that we were not learning, solely based on the fact that our course was not structured in the way we were used to. Instead of sitting in class all day and taking notes and reviewing them for an upcoming exam, we did something that none of us were accustomed to. We spent a brief time in class discussing the events that we would experience that day, and instead of learning conceptionally, we actually spent each and every day visiting different entrepreneurs and learning from them. Being able to listen to their stories and how out of what seems to be nothing, they created something amazing, not just for themselves, but for their community. If I had to narrow what I have learned from my time in this experience, there would be two main things. First, the fact that learning can and should be done in different ways. Second, business has a negative connotation and is associated with people who are money-oriented. This experience showed us how much good business can bring to a community other than financial benefits.
