DAY 8 – China’s Deep- Water Port

Located on an island at the East of Shanghai is one of the world’s largest, man-made deep-water port, Yangshan Deep-Water Port. Deciding to build the port on a nearby island was a strategic choice in that the area maintained consistent depth of water with no silt pile up and material to build the land came from surrounding islands, which helped save costs and energy. Connecting the port to Shanghai is the Donghai bridge, which took nearly 3 years to build and considered the longest sea bridge in the world.
With a total loading capacity of up to 18 million containers a year, the port is an important hub for shipping goods into and out of the Shanghai. In the future, the port plans to release a no-man, auto-port operation which will transport containers with magnets.
Fun fact: This visit was different in that it was our only company meeting where Smith students received the help of a translator to communicate with our presenter.
