Cuisine of Germany

Falafel Brötchen

Currywurst

When one thinks of food in Germany, their mind immediately goes to sausages like Bratwurst or Weisswurst or the thousands of types of crunchy and flavorful Brot. Yes, these are very common foods that people eat almost every day but there is so much more to German cuisine as I have experienced. And as a vegetarian, in a prominently meat based country, I have not only survived but thrived here.

The two pictures I have shown above are my favorite German meals. One is the currywurst, the Berliner sausage, fries, and ketchup dish. I, of course, did not have the sausage version, but rather a vegan chickpea version. It may sound unappetizing but I and my non-vegetarian friends loved it. The other photo is the classic Falafel Brötchen, the vegetarian cousin of the Döner Kebab. It consists of falafel, a Turkish bread ball filled with chickpeas and fava beans and then every spice imaginable. Think subway but in Turkish form.

So for all you vegetarians out there thinking about traveling to Germany. Fear not, you will have some good eats!
