Un canto a la ciudad que el diablo se llevó

El tema de la relación entre la escritura, la comprensión del presente y la presencia del pasado en la novela de Toscana La ciudad que el diablo se llevó se ve bien claro a través del siguiente extracto:  “Canta, oh novelista, la novela de una ciudad que se esfumó…la ciudad que el diablo se llevó.  Canta a aquella ciudad que se llamaba Varsovia….y canta también a esta otra con otra gente, sin sabor, sin valor y sin historia que vino a robarse el bello nombre de Varsovia”.  Este es el canto que desean los vivos que viven entre muertos:  los que se han despertado de la pesadilla al trauma que ahora experimentan a diario. ¿Qué sentido tiene el presente en medio de los escombros para Feliks, Kazimierz, Eugeniusz y Ludwik? El canto fúnebre, con su recuerdo del difunto, es el único canto, la única escritura válida para darle sentido al presente. Se acuerdan de aquella ciudad bella, la Varsovia que amaban, pero aquella ciudad ya no existe. El presente: la vida cotidiana, no tiene sabor, no tiene sentido. Ahora el trauma es la única realidad que viven y desearían escaparse de él, creando una nueva realidad. Buscan salida: en el alcohol, en el cementerio, en los recuerdos, aún en el bacanal. Pero se despiertan a otra realidad y con esta tienen que enfrentarse y seguir viviendo, aún en medio de los muertos, muertos que a veces los trasladan de un lado para otro; muertos que no tienen paz, como los vivos que tampoco la tienen. Viven “sin historia” porque la que tenían ha sido borrada, se ha esfumado. Se la ha llevado el diablo. “Canta, oh novelista” Todo lo dirá el canto fúnebre, pero ¿qué novelista la va a escribir? y ¿en dónde? y ¿quiénes lo cantarán?
