With the growth of modeling and complex analysis across all disciplines during the COVID-19 pandemic, more of our days are being spent waiting for our code to run. To reduce this time, some researchers leverage parallel computing to augment the speed and efficiency of their processing pipelines. While workflows could benefit from incorporating parallel computing, many students and faculty at UMD are unaware of and/or have never attempted to take advantage of high performance computing resources available to UMD staff. This is generally due to a lack of familiarity with the benefits of parallel computing, its availability, and an understanding of the steps needed to access these resources.

Basics of what parallel computing is and how it’s commonly implemented in code

Requesting access and submitting jobs on computing clusters
The workshop will include short lectures coupled with multiple brainstorming and hands-on tutorial sessions to ensure attendees have all the tools they need to begin accessing these resources and submitting their own jobs to a supercomputer.
Students from all disciplines and backgrounds are welcome, and those unfamiliar with either the concept of parallelized computing or working with clusters on campus are highly encouraged to attend, though basic familiarity with coding your own analysis scripts is required. Researchers doing computationally heavy work and who are comfortable working with non-interactive analysis software will benefit the most from this tutorial (e.g., SPSS is NOT available on high performance computing clusters).
