Recent Student Awards

We are pleased to announce that graduate student and teaching assistant, Òscar Santos-Sopena has been selected to receive the  GEORGE MILLS HARPER GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD for his paper  “Arte y literatura en el Siglo de Oro: Una visión de la novela picaresca a través de las obras pictóricas de Diego Velázquez.” The Harper Fund was established to award graduate students funds to attend the South Atlantic Modern Languages Association annual convention. SAMLA and The Harper Fund committee are eager to grant travel funds to graduate students who possess a keen interest in the humanities and demonstrate a capacity for outstanding scholarship. Felicitaciones, Oscar.

We are pleased to announce that Spanish major Lina Morales-Chacana has been selected to receive a 2010 Dean’s Senior Scholar award.  Felicitaciones to Lina, who was also named a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar.  She also participated in the First Annual Research Forum organized by the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.  Her major focus is Latin American Theatre and Culture. We are all so proud of her accomplishments, especially her faculty mentors, Roberta Lavine and Sandra Cypess.

Felicitaciones, Dra. Tanya Huntington-First Prize in radio drama

A radio program that Tanya wrote for the miniseries “Cabezas” just won first prize for radio drama at the 8th Bienal Internacional de Radio in Mexico. The multi-talented Dra. Huntington successfully defended her dissertation this month and is in Mexico enjoying a Mexican government grant to develop her art work.

Her radio program dealt with Padre José Manuel Morelos, a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and one of the revolutionary rebel leaders who, with Padre Hidalgo, led the Mexican War of Independence movement in 1810.

Angela DeLutis-Eichenberger Defends Doctoral Dissertation

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese /SLLC are pleased to announce that Angela DeLutis-Eichenberger successfully defended her dissertation, entitled El proceso semiótico de un héroe decimonónico: un estudio en torno a los “textos-tumbas” de Andrés Bello on Friday, October 29th.

The chair of Dr. DeLutis-Eichenberger’s defense was Prof.  Jorge Aguilar-Mora (SPAN) and the committee members were Dr. Laura Demaria (SPAN), Prof. Carmen Benito-Vessels (SPAN), and Prof. Juan Carlos Quintero-Herencia (SPAN).  The Dean’s Representative was Prof. Pierre Verdaguer (FREN).
